What is Hummus?

Hummus Products

4 kinds of our several flavors of Hummus

Hummus is a dip made from garbanzo beans, also known as chick peas, a legume rich in proteins, vitamins and fibers.  To prepare Hummus, the chick peas are cooked tender, drained then mixed and ground with garlic, lemon juice, olive oil, cumin, sesame tahini   (ground sesame paste).  It is the sesame tahini, which gives our Hummus its' creamy like texture.

Hummus, in Arabic, means chickpeas, which could trace its origins to either Lebanon or Egypt.  In most Mediterranean countries, Hummus is prepared in its most basic recipe, similar to the one mentioned above.  It is in America that we have learned to blend it with other vegetables.  At OASIS NATURALS we feature eight varieties of Hummus, and often at the open air farmers markets, some of our conservative Mediterranean customers are surprised to see a BASIL & SUNDRIED TOMATOES HUMMUS, CILANTRO & JALAPENO HUMMUS, ROASTED GARLIC or GREEK KALAMATA OLIVES & CHIVES HUMMUS.  Whole Foods market, in La Jolla, Ca., carries a roasted vegetables Hummus, similar to OASIS NATURALS’ sweet fire ROASTED RED PEPPER HUMMUS; available along with our ORIGINAL HUMMUS at COSTCO WHOLESALE.

Hummus can be enjoyed as an appetizer with Pita bread.  Substitute mayonnaise with Hummus as a spread for your sandwiches and you will end up with a much less amount of fat and a flavored spread.  I enjoy my Hummus as a spread on some of the delectable European breads from my favorite local bakery, BREAD & Cie, in San Diego’s Hillcrest area. I also add it to thicken or enhance the flavor of my favorite dressings.

What is Tahini?

Tahini Product

Tahini is sesame seed ground into a paste. It is similar to the constancy of peanut butter. We specially import ours from East Mediterranean region.  Tahini is often added to dips or sauces, to enrich their flavors and to increase the creamy and rich texture.  Tahini has special properties and antioxidant that gives it a long shelf life.  It is rich in B vitamins and is an excellent source of iron and phosphorus.

Couscous is made from durum wheat (hard wheat) Semolina, it is a pasta which is turned into little pellets.  Couscous is indigenous to North Africa and it is very popular in Tunisia.  Couscous is often savored with meat, fish, vegetables as well as a dessert (mesfoof).  Our Couscous Salad with broiled vegetables, and kalamata olives is an original Oasis Naturals creation.

What kinds of ingredients do we use?

Only quality ingredients go in the preparation of any food product in our kitchen.  In our Roasted Red Pepper Tapenade (a type of Muhammara) for instance, we use tabil, pomegranate, roasted walnuts, olive oil and imported tahini.  Daily delivered vegetables for all our fresh salad as well as our Cilantro & Jalapeno Hummus.

Please Note: Cilantro & Jalapeno Hummus is an Oasis Naturals original creation and any other production by any other name is a flattering imitation.

How do our products compare?

High quality, value and service.

For instance, a store would run out of a product like cilantro and jalapeno hummus. Customers, instead of picking up an alternate brand, they would call us and if convenient, they will drive all the way to our kitchen and stock up.

Our appetizers and salads are now available at a very competitive price at most CostCo's, health food stores and Farmers Markers in the San Diego, Orange County and Los Angeles areas.
